معرفی
Professor Rob Middleton is Professor of Orthopaedics at Bournemouth University and Head of the Orthopaedic Research Institute. He is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in the NHS at Royal Bournemouth and Poole Hospitals, where he serves as Director of Trauma, and also practices privately at Nuffield Health and The Harbour Hospital, Poole.
His academic and clinical leadership is prominent in enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS), robotic-assisted hip replacement, and quality improvement in orthopaedics. Appointed National Clinical Lead in hip and knee replacement at the NHS Institute of Innovation and Improvement in 2008, he has pioneered ERAS pathways that reduce hospital stays and improve outcomes.
- Specializes in hip replacement and robotic surgery
- Active researcher with over 15 years of innovation in orthopaedic techniques
- One of the UK’s most experienced robotic hip surgeons since introducing Mako robotic surgery in 2017
- Longstanding interest in virtual reality, surgical simulation, and medical devices
His recent publications reveal a strong focus on patient-centered outcomes, prehabilitation, nutrition, economic analysis of implants, and data-driven quality improvement. Research spans clinical trials, cohort studies, and narrative reviews, often in collaboration with Dr. Thomas Wainwright.
Scientific Awards and Recognition:
- National Clinical Lead, NHS Institute of Innovation and Improvement (2008)
- Visiting Fellow, Bournemouth University
- Member, NICE Clinical Guideline Development Group for Osteoarthritis
- Invited speaker at international conferences on robotic surgery and ERAS
Advising and Grants:
While formal students are not listed, he leads a major research institute and collaborates widely. His funded projects include studies on preventing DVT with NMES, oxidized zirconium implants, highly cross-linked polyethylene, and robotic surgery outcomes.
Labs and Teams:
He leads the Orthopaedic Research Institute (ORI) at Bournemouth University, which integrates clinical research, technology innovation, and education. The ORI team conducts multidisciplinary research in ERAS, robotics, and virtual reality simulation, often in partnership with NHS trusts and industry.
