Ritch Calvin is an Associate Professor and Graduate Program Director in the Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Department at Stony Brook University's College of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on feminist theory, Latina literature, and queer science fiction, emphasizing frameworks rooted in writers' cultural and political contexts. He has published extensively on topics including feminist epistemology, queer futurism, and speculative fiction's intersection with identity politics.
Calvin earned a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature with a Graduate Certificate in Women's Studies. His work critiques traditional literary analysis frameworks through studies of Mexicana/Chicana writers and explores how feminist science fiction challenges epistemological norms. He has authored monographs like Feminist Science Fiction and Feminist Epistemology (2016) and edited volumes analyzing Philip K. Dick, Octavia Butler, and Gilmore Girls.
As former President of the Science Fiction Research Association, he has shaped academic discourse in science fiction studies. His recent publications (2023-2024) expand into queer science fiction comics and speculative futures. Awards include the 2012 Science Fiction Research Association Awards.
Calvin's advising focuses on graduate students exploring feminist and queer speculative narratives. His work bridges literary analysis with social justice, emphasizing marginalized voices in speculative genres. Active in academic service, he has held editorial roles and contributed to multiple interdisciplinary research initiatives.
