Rita Pinto is a Visiting Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon (FMUL) and a researcher at the Cardiovascular Center of the University of Lisbon (CCUL@RISE). She coordinates the Cardiovascular Exercise and Rehabilitation Laboratory and the Physical Activity Unit at the Institute of Preventive Medicine and Public Health. Her academic roles include membership in the scientific advisory board of the RISE Laboratory and the EAPC Young Community Core Group of the European Society of Cardiology (2024-2026).
Dr. Pinto holds a PhD in Physical Activity and Health (2019) from the Faculty of Human Kinetics (FMH-UL) and multiple advanced degrees in Exercise and Health, Sports Science, and Cardiac Rehabilitation. Her research focuses on cardiovascular disease, cardiac rehabilitation, exercise physiology, and physical activity promotion. She has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and presented over 70 papers at international conferences.
Her work emphasizes the integration of exercise science and clinical cardiology, particularly in improving patient outcomes through structured rehabilitation programs. She currently serves as Deputy Director of the National Program for the Promotion of Physical Activity (PNPAF) under the Portuguese Directorate-General for Health (DGS), advocating for evidence-based physical activity policies.
Key research interests include the efficacy of cardiac rehabilitation phases (2 and 3), cardiopulmonary exercise testing, and the role of physical activity in managing conditions like heart failure and chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension. Her studies often bridge clinical practice and population health, addressing gaps in guideline implementation and patient adherence to rehabilitation protocols.
