Rita Matulionyte is an Associate Professor at Macquarie Law School, Macquarie University, specializing in intellectual property and technology law with particular expertise in AI regulation. An internationally recognized expert, she advises governments and international bodies including the European Commission and European Patent Office.
Research Focus: Her work examines legal frameworks for emerging technologies, especially AI transparency requirements, intellectual property challenges in generative AI systems, facial recognition regulation, and automated government decision-making. Current projects investigate explainable AI in healthcare and copyright implications of large language models.
Published over 60 peer-reviewed works including interdisciplinary studies on AI governance. Recent publications analyze tensions between trade secrets and algorithmic transparency, legal personhood of AI systems, and regulatory models for biometric technologies. Authored the monograph Applicable Law to Copyright Infringement.
Leadership: Leads Emerging Technologies Workstream at Australian Society for Computers and Law, Explainable AI research at Macquarie's Applied AI Centre, and serves on Australia Standards Committee IT-043. Affiliate of ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision Making.
Awards: Recipient of Women in AI Award 2023 (Law Category).
