Rikard Emanuelsson is a Lecturer at Uppsala University's Department of Chemistry - BMC, specializing in Organic Chemistry. He leads the Emanuelsson group, which focuses on developing tailored organic polymers and composites for a greener and more circular society. His research primarily centers on porous polymers, including covalent organic frameworks and porous organic polymers, and their applications in energy storage, electrocatalysis, and metal ion capture from aqueous solutions.
Dr. Emanuelsson's research program combines organic synthesis, material characterization, and electrochemistry to explore optimal structures and material properties. He has made significant contributions to conducting redox polymers for energy storage applications, particularly in organic batteries and proton-based energy storage systems. His work includes eliminating carbon additives in battery electrodes and developing materials that function under extreme conditions like sub-zero temperatures.
His publication record shows a clear progression from fundamental molecular design to practical device implementation. Recent work focuses on understanding cation/anion effects on redox chemistry and developing sophisticated composite materials with precisely controlled properties. His 2017 paper 'An All-Organic Proton Battery' in the Journal of the American Chemical Society represents a significant contribution to the field.
Dr. Emanuelsson's research has gained substantial attention, with multiple publications referenced in patents and covered by news outlets. His work has accumulated significant readership on academic platforms, indicating its relevance in materials science and electrochemistry.
As a mentor, he advises several doctoral and postdoctoral researchers, including Philipp Gaiser (PhD student), Tyran Günther (Visiting researcher), Sumanta Let, and Poulami Majumder. His group collaborates with researchers both within Sweden and internationally, as well as with industrial partners in Sweden and the Baltics, ensuring fundamental research translates into practical applications.
The Emanuelsson group operates advanced laboratories for organic synthesis, material characterization, and electrochemical testing, enabling comprehensive investigation of novel materials from molecular design through to device implementation.
