Rienk Vermij serves as Professor of the History of Science and Director of the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies at the University of Oklahoma's Department of the History of Science, Technology, and Medicine within the Dodge Family College of Arts and Sciences. Originally from the Netherlands, Professor Vermij joined OU in 2007 after completing his academic training in his home country, bringing expertise in early modern scientific thought to the American academy.
Professor Vermij earned his Doctoraalexamen (Master's degree) in History from the University of Utrecht in 1984, followed by a Ph.D. in Science and Arts from the same institution in 1991. His doctoral work at the Institute for History of Science at Utrecht established his foundation in historical methodology and early modern scientific thought.
His research program centers on early modern natural philosophy and astronomy, with particular expertise in the reception of Copernicanism, Aristotelian meteorology, and Enlightenment-era science. Vermij has made significant contributions to understanding how scientific knowledge developed within specific cultural and religious contexts, especially in the Dutch intellectual tradition. His current work examines the marginalization of astrology, the strategic use of dedications in scientific texts, and the methodological challenges of writing history of science in contemporary times when scientific authority is increasingly contested.
Professor Vermij's publication record demonstrates consistent scholarly output spanning multiple subfields within history of science. His recent books and articles reveal a methodological approach that connects scientific ideas with their broader intellectual and cultural contexts, particularly examining how knowledge was constructed and transmitted in early modern Europe. His 2024 textbook "A History of Western Science: The Basics" provides a comprehensive overview accessible to students and general readers alike, avoiding technical language while maintaining scholarly rigor.
As Director of the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies, Vermij oversees interdisciplinary programming that connects scholars across various departments to explore pre-modern and early modern intellectual developments. This leadership role complements his research interests and facilitates cross-disciplinary dialogue about historical knowledge systems.
