Dr. Rienk Fokkema is a Research Fellow at the Groningen Institute for Evolutionary Life Sciences (GIELS), Faculty of Science and Engineering at the University of Groningen. His research focuses on predator-prey dynamics in agricultural landscapes, meadow bird conservation, and the ecological impacts of sustainable farming practices. He leads the Grutto-Landschap Project, which investigates biodiversity responses to innovative agricultural methods through biomonitoring and habitat analysis.
Key research interests include:
- Ecological interactions between predators and meadow birds
- GPS tracking and remote sensing applications in wildlife ecology
- Agri-environment scheme effectiveness assessments
- Landscape-level conservation strategies
Recent work highlights include publishing on habitat shifts in Black-tailed Godwits and evaluating how agri-policies impact target species like meadow birds. His research integrates field observations with geospatial technologies to inform sustainable land management.
Collaborations involve multidisciplinary teams examining predator mapping in dairy farming regions and long-term landscape health monitoring. Media engagements highlight public outreach efforts through articles like 'Wildcamera's track predators in Fryslân' and 'Koolmezen leeggelopen'.
