Riemer Vegter is an Assistant Professor of Human Movement Sciences at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), part of the University of Groningen. He coordinates the Paralympic research laboratory, focusing on the biomechanics and physiology of wheelchair athletes. In March 2022, he was appointed to the Young Academy Groningen (YAG), recognizing his impactful research and societal contributions. Vegter’s work emphasizes optimizing wheelchair propulsion techniques to enhance athletic performance and prevent injuries, with a particular focus on Paralympic sports.
His research interests include wheelchair biomechanics, motor learning, ergonomics, and the application of data science in sports. He has secured significant grants, including a ZonMw subsidy for the 'WheelPower' project, which explores data-driven methods to improve wheelchair athletes' performance. His studies often involve collaborations with institutions like the UMCG and international partners, addressing topics such as propulsion efficiency, ergometer design, and injury prevention.
Vegter has published extensively in journals like *American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation*, *Journal of Neuroengineering and Rehabilitation*, and *Sports Engineering*. His work bridges rehabilitation science and sports technology, contributing to both academic knowledge and practical applications for athletes and clinicians.
His professional trajectory includes teaching roles, such as his nomination for the RUG Lecturer of the Year in 2015, and leadership in organizing conferences like RehabMove. Vegter’s interdisciplinary approach integrates biomechanical analysis, physiological testing, and technological innovation to advance the field of human movement sciences.
