Rico Merkert

Professor Rico Merkert holds the Chair in Transport and Supply Chain Management at The University of Sydney and serves as Deputy Director of the Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies (ITLS). He has a PhD in Transport Economics and has held academic positions at institutions such as Cranfield University and UC Berkeley. He is also a Visiting Professor at the University of Johannesburg.

Education: PhD Leeds, MSc TU Berlin/NHH Bergen.

Research interests focus on transport and supply chain management, sustainability, airline strategy, performance measurement, and policy analysis. His work addresses decarbonization, freight logistics, and the strategic implications of technological innovation in transport systems.

Recent publications explore decarbonization policies, post-pandemic transport trends, and airline sustainability. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Air Transport Management and contributes to U.S. Transportation Research Board committees.

Current advisees include students researching topics such as sustainable freight forwarding and electric vehicle battery supply chains. His work emphasizes cross-disciplinary collaboration and policy-relevant outcomes.
