Rick Honaker

Rick Honaker is a Professor in the Mining Engineering department at the University of Kentucky's Stanley and Karen Pigman College of Engineering. His research focuses on developing innovative technologies for recovering critical elements and materials from coal and its byproducts, supporting renewable energy manufacturing through both fundamental and applied engineering approaches.

His research interests span Advanced Physical Processing, Mineral Processing Education, and Applied Surface Chemistry, with a strong emphasis on Coal Preparation and Fine Particle Processing. Recent projects include optimizing solvent extraction circuits, calcination processes, and exploring novel methods for rare earth element (REE) recovery from coal waste streams.

Recent publications demonstrate a focus on REE recovery from coal and byproducts, including acid leaching, precipitation, and bioleaching techniques. His work also addresses environmental sustainability in mining operations through carbon capture integration and waste minimization strategies.

Honaker leads the Extractive Metallurgy Research Group at UK, which provides educational opportunities for students in both undergraduate and graduate programs. His research has been featured in media outlets such as UKNOW and UK Research Feature, highlighting technological advancements like the HydroFloat™ flotation system and pilot-scale REE extraction plants.
