Richard Zare is the Marguerite Blake Wilbur Professor of Natural Science and Professor of Chemistry (and Physics by courtesy) at Stanford University. A pioneer in laser-based chemical analysis and nanoscale chemistry, he joined Stanford in 1977 after faculty positions at MIT, University of Colorado, and Columbia University. His research spans reaction dynamics, microdroplet chemistry, and analytical instrumentation, with transformative contributions to laser-induced fluorescence and mass spectrometry.
Education includes a Ph.D. in Chemical Physics from Harvard University (1964) and a B.A. in Chemistry and Physics (1961).
Research Interests: Zare's work integrates physical and analytical chemistry to explore molecular collisions, nanoscale analysis, and microdroplet reactivity. His lab develops tools for studying chemical processes in confined volumes, extraterrestrial materials, and biological systems, emphasizing sustainable chemistry and energy applications.
