Dr. Richard Ward is a Lecturer in Cyber Security at the University of South Wales, affiliated with the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Science and the Computing, Cybersecurity, Mathematics and Informatics Research and Innovation Group. He holds a PhD in Evolution of Loosely Synchronized Spreading Codes in CDMA systems (2008). His research spans Cyber Security, AI, cryptography, and pedagogy. He leads BSc courses in Applied Cyber Security and Computer Security, teaching areas like secure coding, cryptography, and ethical hacking. Recent research focuses on IoT security, AI-driven risk assessment, and hardware vulnerabilities in Apple silicon.

Research interests include side-channel attacks, IoMT security, and cross-disciplinary AI applications. His work addresses UN Sustainable Development Goals related to innovation and infrastructure. He actively contributes to conferences like the European Conference on Cyber Warfare and Security.
He supervises eight PhD students exploring topics such as automated vehicle security, IoMT compliance frameworks, and side-channel attack vulnerabilities. Recent publications address healthcare cyber threats, IoMT privacy frameworks, and AI supply chain risks. He participates in pedagogy research, presenting at USW Learning & Teaching Conferences (2024, 2022, 2020) and CELT events (2018).
Teaching focuses on challenged-based learning and introductory cyber security education, including outreach to primary school students. He chairs USW’s Cyber Security Education Ecosystem initiatives and advises on governance frameworks for emerging technologies.
