Richard Wallis is a Professor and Principal Academic at Bournemouth University's Department of Media Production. His roles include teaching film and television since 2012, leading undergraduate programs, and serving as External Examiner for Northumbria University (2019–2023). He previously held executive roles at Twofour Group and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. His research focuses on media industry labor markets, career development, and media policy, with projects addressing skills gaps, workplace bullying, and freelance career sustainability. He holds a British Academy Innovation Fellowship (2024–25) for his work on supportive offboarding practices in TV.
Education includes a PhD in Media Literacy Policy from Loughborough University (2014), MPhil in Sociology & Media from Exeter University (1987), and BA in Communication Studies from Sunderland University (1983). His research spans media pedagogy, religious broadcasting, and policy analysis, with outputs in journals like Media Industries, Creative Industries Journal, and International Journal of Cultural Policy.
Key research projects include the Career Narratives Project (2017–20), State of Play (2020), and the BFI-funded Mid-Career Support initiative (2021–22). He has authored reports on production management skills gaps and workplace bullying in TV. His current fellowship addresses sustainable freelance careers through offboarding practices.
Grants include the BFI Careers Toolkit Project (2022) and a DCMS Online Safety Mapping Exercise (2019). He collaborates with industry bodies like Bectu and Equity, and his work appears in Broadcast Magazine and The Conversation. He is affiliated with the Centre for Excellence in Media Practice (CEMP) and actively engages in media education summits and policy consultations.
