Professor Richard Thompson OBE FRS is a globally renowned marine scientist and Director of the Marine Institute at the University of Plymouth. He leads the International Marine Litter Research Unit, pioneering research into marine microplastics and their environmental impacts. His work has influenced UK and international policies, including bans on microbeads and plastic bags. He holds the 2023 Blue Planet Prize, an OBE (2017), and the Queen’s Anniversary Prize (2019).
Research interests focus on marine litter distribution, plastic pollution effects, and sustainable solutions. He has supervised over 30 PhD students, advising on topics like microplastic toxicity and behavioral science in litter reduction.
