Dr Richard Streeter is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Geography & Sustainable Development, University of St Andrews, where he has been a faculty member since 2013. He is affiliated with the Bell-Edwards Geographic Data Institute and the Environmental Change Research Group, focusing on volcanic ash (tephra), human-environment interactions over the Holocene, and land degradation patterns.

Dr Streeter's research spans three interconnected areas: volcanic ash (tephra) studies, human-environment interactions during the Holocene, and erosion patterns in high-latitude rangelands. His work employs tephrochronology for environmental reconstruction, investigates how tephra properties are modified by surface processes, and uses UAV technology to map erosion patterns in Iceland. His geographic focus includes Iceland, the United States, Chile, Finland, and Scotland, with particular emphasis on understanding long-term sustainability of North Atlantic settlements.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on tephrochronology applications, rock glacier dynamics, and innovative remote sensing approaches to monitor soil erosion. The research shows increasing integration of satellite data with field observations, particularly in Arctic environments where vegetation changes complicate erosion assessment.
Dr Streeter has successfully supervised multiple postgraduate students and secured research funding from organizations including NERC and the Carnegie Trust. His projects include 'Investigating the early human settlements of Iceland with ancient soil DNA' and 'Tephra Transformations in South America.'
He teaches advanced courses in physical geography and volcanic ash studies, and actively supervises postgraduate research students. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to environmental protection and sustainable land management.
