Richard Stevens

Richard Stevens is an Associate Professor at the University of Twente and a member of the Physics of Fluids group led by Professor Detlef Lohse. The group belongs to the Faculty of Science and Technology and is embedded in the Max Planck Center Twente and the MESA+ institute.

His research focuses on using high-fidelity computer simulations to study turbulent flows with particular emphasis on:

• Rayleigh-Bénard convection (fluid layer heated from below and cooled from above)
• Turbulent flows in extended wind farms
• Wind farm layout optimization
• Atmospheric flow dynamics

Stevens' work bridges fundamental fluid dynamics research with practical renewable energy applications. He states 'My research contributes to solving the global energy challenges,' emphasizing how wind energy represents 'an important step towards sustainability' that 'could be an inexhaustible source of energy.'

His notable scientific recognition includes:

Stevens mentors PhD students and postdocs while integrating research findings into university courses to demonstrate real-world applications of theoretical concepts. He received his PhD in Applied Physics from the University of Twente with distinction in 2011, worked as a postdoc at Johns Hopkins University on the WINDINSPIRE project, and returned to the University of Twente as a tenure-track Associate Professor in 2015.
