Richard Rothenberg

Dr. Richard Rothenberg is a prominent academic affiliated with Georgia State University's Urban Studies Institute, where he focuses on urban health disparities, epidemiology, and infectious disease research. He previously served as a Professor of Medicine at Emory University (1993–2007) and spent 25 years at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). His expertise spans STD, HIV/AIDS epidemiology, and the application of urban metrics to address health inequities.

Dr. Rothenberg holds an M.D. from Harvard Medical School, an M.P.H. from Harvard School of Public Health, and a Diplôme de Français from Université de Dijon. His research integrates social network analysis with epidemiological methods, emphasizing the role of behavioral and structural factors in disease transmission. He has authored over 200 peer-reviewed articles and was recognized with the Parran Award (now Distinguished Service Award) for lifetime contributions to STD research.

He currently teaches epidemiologic methods, HIV/STD prevention, and grant writing. His recent work includes studies on pandemic response strategies, urban health indices, and behavioral interventions in maternal care. Dr. Rothenberg has led interdisciplinary initiatives, including the development of the Urban Health Index, and contributed to global health projects in Chile, Pakistan, and other regions.

He served as Editor-in-Chief of the Annals of Epidemiology for 18 years and remains active on editorial boards. His research labs at Georgia State focus on housing policy, micromobility, and sustainable urban futures, aligning with his commitment to addressing systemic health disparities through innovative approaches.
