Professor Richard Ronald serves as Chair of Political and Economic Geographies at the University of Amsterdam's Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences within the Department of Geography, Planning and International Development Studies. He additionally holds an Adjunct Professor position at the Australian Centre for Housing Research. His academic career spans multiple continents, with visiting appointments at National University of Singapore, University of Birmingham, Kyung Hee University, and as Distinguished Professor at Hong Kong Metropolitan University.
Dr. Ronald's research expertise centers on housing in relation to social, economic and urban transformations, with particular focus on cities across Europe and Asia Pacific. His work examines the intersection of housing markets and policies with life-course transitions, demographic change, and political economy. Current research addresses how socioeconomic transformations shape and are shaped by kinship, household practices, and intergenerational relations.
His publications reveal a strong focus on housing wealth accumulation, family dynamics, and neoliberal economic restructuring. Recent work explores shared housing arrangements, institutionalization of rental markets, and how families mobilize homes as assets across different national contexts.
Professor Ronald has secured significant research funding from the European Research Council, Dutch Ministry of the Interior, and Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science. He currently serves as Editor of Palgrave Macmillan's 'Contemporary City' book series and previously served as Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Housing Policy.
