Dr. Richard King is a Professor at Arizona State University’s School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering, joining in 2015. Previously, he served as Principal Scientist and Boeing Technical Fellow at Spectrolab, Inc., where his work contributed to groundbreaking advancements in photovoltaics.
- Ph.D., Electrical Engineering (1990), Stanford University
- M.S., Electrical Engineering (1987), Stanford University
- B.S., Physics (1985), Stanford University
Dr. King’s research spans 35 years, focusing on photovoltaics, semiconductor defects and recombination, solar cell optics, metamorphic III-V materials, dilute nitride GaInNAs, sublattice ordering, high-transparency tunnel junctions, and multijunction solar cells. He pioneered the development of 40% efficiency solar cells in 2006 and continues to explore photovoltaic efficiency limits, defect-tolerant materials, and societal impacts on solar deployment.
- IEEE Fellow
- Recipient of the 2010 William R. Cherry Award
- Boeing Technical Fellow
Dr. King’s research group investigates photon-matter interactions, thermal management in solar cells, and global solar electricity deployment strategies. He also co-founded the IEEE Journal of Photovoltaics and chaired the 40th IEEE Photovoltaic Specialists Conference (2014).
