Richard Metzgar

Richard Metzgar is Professor of 2D Design & 3D Design in the Department of Art and Design at the State University of New York at Oswego. His academic career bridges innovative teaching practices with internationally recognized collaborative art projects.

Metzgar's research centers on place, time, history, mapping, and spatiality through collaborative frameworks. Since 1999, his partnership with artist Paul Bartow (Bartow + Metzgar) has produced large-scale multimedia installations across North America. Current work includes a multi-year Erie Canal mapping project (2015-present) using human and nonhuman drawing methods, and musical collaborations with Eric Metzgar exploring place through historical and temporal lenses.

His scholarly publications and conference presentations focus on foundational art education methodologies, including architectural model integration and thematic content development in design courses. Recent work was presented at SECAC (2019) and FATE Conferences (2019, 2017, 2015).

Metzgar has received significant recognition including:

Student mentorship remains central to his practice, integrating research, production, and exhibition within foundational coursework.
