Richard McElreath

Richard McElreath is a Full Professor and Director of the Department of Human Behavior, Ecology, and Culture at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany. He also holds an honorary professorship in Human Evolutionary Ecology at Leipzig University. His research focuses on the role of culture in human evolution and adaptation, alongside contributions to Bayesian statistical methods through his influential textbook Statistical Rethinking.

McElreath earned his PhD in Anthropology from UCLA and a BS in Anthropology and Human Biology from Emory University. His academic career includes roles as Professor and Associate Professor at UC Davis, where he contributed to initiatives like the CLIMB training program.

His research interests span cultural evolution, social learning dynamics, and statistical modeling in anthropology. He has led projects on topics such as ethnic boundary formation, cooperative behavior, and the application of Bayesian methods in ecology and evolution. His work bridges theoretical models with empirical data, emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration.

McElreath has secured numerous grants, including NSF funding for studies on foraging strategies and cultural dynamics. Notable awards include the UCD Chancellor’s Fellow (2007) and a Max Planck post-doctoral fellowship (2001–2002).

He has mentored over a dozen PhD students and post-doctoral researchers, many of whom now hold academic roles globally. His software contributions, such as the rethinking R package, have become essential tools for Bayesian analysis.

McElreath’s department at the Max Planck Institute integrates theory with data analysis, supporting collaborative projects like the EBC Consortium’s brain evolution studies. His work continues to explore the interplay between human behavior, ecology, and culture.
