Richard Marvin serves as an Adjunct Professor of Music specializing in Composition: Music Scoring for Visual Media at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music, teaching Episodic Television Scoring from his Los Angeles studio RMS since January 2024. He actively contributes to the institution as a member of the Dean's Advisory Board, where he developed the Music Scoring for Visual Media degree program and established a partnership with Film Independent's Project Involve for student industry placements.
Marvin's educational foundation began in suburban Philadelphia with piano studies at age six, followed by training at Jenkintown Music School and Settlement Music School where he studied theory and counterpoint under Donald Rappaport. After graduating from Springfield High School, he pursued jazz studies at Indiana University with David Baker while studying classical piano with Bronja Foster, concurrently exploring composition, orchestration, and electronic music performance.
His professional expertise centers on film and television scoring, evolving from his 1980s work as a sought-after synthesizer session musician in Hollywood studios to composing for acclaimed series including 'Grimm', 'Six Feet Under', and 'In Treatment', alongside feature films such as 'Surrogates' and 'U-571'. His methodology uniquely integrates electronic music techniques with traditional orchestration, reflecting decades of experience working with legendary composers like John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith.
Marvin bridges academic instruction and industry practice through his studio RMS in Los Angeles, which functions as both a professional composition space and teaching environment. His partnership with Film Independent provides Jacobs School students with direct access to industry opportunities through the Project Involve program, demonstrating his commitment to cultivating next-generation media composers.
