Dr. Richard LeGrand is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. He teaches foundational and advanced courses including Introduction to Psychology, Applied Statistics, Perception, Cognition, and Special Topics: The Psychology of Face Perception.
His research focuses on the cognitive and neural mechanisms underlying face processing. He investigates how face detection, identity recognition, and expression interpretation develop from infancy to adulthood, using behavioral and neurophysiological measures like event-related potentials (N170/N250 components). His work includes studying patient populations with face-processing deficits (prosopagnosia, autism, congenital cataract recovery).
Recent publications highlight his contributions to understanding holistic/analytic perception of facial expressions, developmental trajectories of face recognition expertise, and the impact of early visual deprivation on neural face processing. He actively supervises honours students in these areas.
