Richard Katz is an Associate Professor of Geodynamics at the University of Oxford, affiliated with the Department of Earth Sciences. He leads the FoaLab, a research group focused on geophysical and planetary processes involving fluid mechanics and phase changes, particularly magma/mantle dynamics at plate-tectonic boundaries and ice sheet dynamics.
- Research Interests: Geodynamics, Magma Dynamics, Mantle Convection, Ice Sheet and Subglacial Hydrology, Fluid Mechanics, Phase Change Processes, Computational Geophysics, Theoretical Modeling
- Lab Members: Includes PhD students Hanwen Zhang, Rhiannon Ackland, Luke Kearney, and Abraham Francis; MSc students Catherine Gower and Andras Cserep; and postdoctoral researchers Calum Braham and Tim Davis.
- Funding: Supported by grants enabling computational resource access, conference participation, and field studies.
The FoaLab is named after his grandfather, Piero P. Foa, an endocrinologist and early scientific mentor whose legacy inspires the lab’s ethos of creativity and collaboration.
