Richard K. Lester is the Japan Steel Industry Professor and Professor of Nuclear Science and Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), School of Engineering. He served as MIT's Vice Provost for International Activities from 2015 to 2024 and previously chaired the Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering. Lester founded and chairs the MIT Industrial Performance Center and has led major climate initiatives including the Climate Project at MIT and MIT's Climate Grand Challenges, serving interim Vice President for Climate.
Lester's research centers on innovation management, industrial strategy, and energy-climate policy with emphasis on nuclear technology control and risk management. His work addresses global climate challenges, energy security, and low-carbon transitions through studies of U.S. energy innovation systems, nuclear power futures (including deep borehole waste disposal), China's energy sector, and university roles in regional economic development. His eight books include Unlocking Energy Innovation: How America Can Build a Low-Cost, Low-Carbon Energy System.
Recent publications reveal dual expertise: administrative reports document MIT's international strategy evolution, while scholarly work focuses on energy system decarbonization, nuclear-renewable integration, and U.S.-China nuclear cooperation. Key themes include long-duration storage solutions, grid stability in low-carbon systems, and innovation roadmaps for nuclear energy deployment.
Lester's major recognitions include:
- Gordon Y. Billard Award, MIT (2024) for community impact beyond normal duties
- Special Award, American Nuclear Society (2015)
- Ruth and Joel Spira Award for Distinguished Teaching, MIT School of Engineering
As founder of the Industrial Performance Center and leader of MIT's climate initiatives, Lester has directed substantial research funding toward industrial innovation and climate solutions. His advisory work spans nuclear engineering and innovation management students, though specific names aren't documented. Current teaching includes courses on nuclear technology management and applications.
Lester directs the MIT Industrial Performance Center, which coordinates interdisciplinary research on industrial competitiveness. His leadership extends to the Climate Project at MIT and Climate Grand Challenges teams, engaging multiple departments in decarbonization research. Recent work emphasizes bridging university expertise with industrial practice for sustainable development.
