Richard J. Fletcher is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His research focuses on the collective quantum behavior of many-particle systems, particularly using dilute atomic vapors cooled to nanokelvin temperatures and manipulated with laser and magnetic fields. He explores engineered quantum systems to study phenomena like dimensionality effects, gauge fields, and correlated states of matter.
Education: BSc from Cambridge University (2010), PhD from Cambridge under Zoran Hadzibabic (2016). He was a Pappalardo Fellow at MIT (2016–2020) before joining the faculty. His work bridges quantum fluids, ultracold atoms, and topological states.
Research interests include chiral edge transport, Bose-Einstein condensation in low dimensions, and geometric squeezing in rotating systems. His recent articles highlight studies on rotating quantum gases, degenerate mixtures, and quantum Hall physics. Collaborations involve MIT’s Center for Ultracold Atoms, which recently received funding to advance quantum systems research.
