Richard Hamelin is a Professor and Department Head of Forest and Conservation Sciences at the University of British Columbia (UBC) Faculty of Forestry. He holds the UBC Chair in Forest Conservation and focuses on integrating molecular biology, genomics, and ecology to advance forest health and protection.
- Research Areas: Pathogen Population Genetics, Genomic Biosurveillance, Forest Pathogen Genomics, Climate Change and Tree Resistance, Forest Insect-Fungi Symbioses, and Sustainable Forest Management Systems.
His work includes developing DNA-based detection tools for pathogens, studying climate-driven disease resistance, and modeling forest pest invasions using genomic data. He has published extensively on fungal and oomycete pathogens affecting conifers and hardwoods.
- Scientific Awards: Canadian Institute of Forestry (2023), American Phytopathological Society Fellow (2020), International Union of Forest Research Organizations (2014), and others.
Hamelin's team also pioneers portable real-time PCR assays for rapid pathogen identification and investigates the genetic basis of host-pathogen interactions to inform biosecurity and restoration strategies.
