Professor Richard Hall-Wilton is an Adjunct Professor at Mid-Sweden University and serves as the Detector Group Leader at the European Spallation Source (ESS) since 2011. He is also Deputy Division Head of Instrument Technologies at ESS, leading critical R&D efforts to replace Helium-3 in neutron detection systems through collaborations across Europe and internationally.
Research Interests: His work focuses on advanced detector systems, particularly
- Neutron detectors (Boron-10 and Diamond technologies)
- Beam monitoring systems for particle accelerators
- Fundamental physics experiments at spallation sources
- Micro-pattern gaseous detectors for high-energy physics
- Gamma-ray sensitivity mitigation in neutron detection
Expertise: With a PhD in Experimental High Energy Physics (University of Bristol, 1998), he has extensive experience in detector design, commissioning, and operation at institutions like CERN, DESY, and CMS. His career spans 112 ZEUS Collaboration papers, 18 RD42 Collaboration papers, and over 400 CMS Collaboration papers.
Collaborations: He is a founding member of ERDIT, coordinates the Swedish Radiation Detector Platform, and participates in the nnbar, ESSnuSB, and RD51 collaborations. His work bridges neutron scattering, particle physics, and detector development.
