Dr. Richard Goldberg is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry-Division of Psychiatric Services Research at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and serves as Director of the VA Capitol Health Care Network (VISN 5) Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center (MIRECC). His work focuses on recovery-oriented treatments and services for individuals with serious mental illness, integrating research, education, and clinical practice to enhance community functioning and quality of care.
Education:
- Undergraduate studies at Cornell University
- Ph.D. in Clinical/Community Psychology from the University of Maryland, College Park (1994)
His research interests include services research, medical co-morbidity, quality of care, and implementation science. He leads national VA training initiatives, including the Interprofessional Fellowship Program in Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Recovery-Oriented Services, and oversees programs to improve delivery of social skills training and self-management interventions. His work emphasizes behavioral health interventions and consumer-led services to address systemic disparities in mental healthcare.
Dr. Goldberg’s programs and research aim to bridge clinical practice with evidence-based strategies, particularly for veterans and other vulnerable populations. His contributions span translational research, training the next generation of mental health professionals, and policy-driven improvements in healthcare delivery systems.
