Richard F. Hirsh

Richard F. Hirsh is a Professor of History at Virginia Tech, affiliated with both the Department of History in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences and Science & Technology Studies. His academic career bridges physics and history, with a Master's degree in Physics and a Ph.D. in History of Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

His research focuses on the historical development of American electric utility systems, with particular expertise in rural electrification, utility regulation and deregulation, renewable energy adoption, and energy efficiency technologies. Hirsh's work challenges conventional historical narratives, most notably in his 2022 book Powering American Farms, which revises the standard story of rural electrification by highlighting pre-New Deal efforts by private utilities and agricultural engineers.
