Richard Eves is a Senior Fellow in the Department of Pacific Affairs at the Australian National University, specializing in anthropological research on social change in Melanesia with extensive fieldwork across Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. His work bridges anthropology, development studies, and international health through critical analysis of gender dynamics, violence, and religious transformation.
His educational background includes a BA from the University of Adelaide and a PhD from the Australian National University. This foundation supports his decades-long engagement with Melanesian communities, particularly in New Ireland Province where he conducted long-term ethnographic research.
Eves' research program critically examines gender-based violence (including sorcery-related violence and marital sexual violence), the impacts of Pentecostal Christianity on traditional societies, HIV/AIDS responses in Melanesia, and women's economic empowerment initiatives. His fieldwork spans Southern Highlands, Hela, Western Highlands, Chimbu, Western, Eastern Highlands, Morobe, Milne Bay, and Bougainville provinces in PNG, generating nuanced understandings of how global health interventions intersect with local cultural frameworks.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals persistent focus on economic dimensions of violence, religious transformation in healing practices, and the gendered consequences of resource extraction. His work consistently documents how traditional belief systems interact with modern development challenges, particularly examining the tension between Western interventions and indigenous knowledge systems in contexts of violence prevention and health programming.
Eves has directed and contributed to significant externally funded projects including the Australian Government's Pacific Women Shaping Pacific Development program 'Do No Harm' initiative examining women's economic empowerment and violence against women, and multiple DFAT-funded projects on sorcery accusation-related violence. His collaborative research frequently involves partnerships with AusAID, Caritas Australia, and the State, Society and Governance in Melanesia (SSGM) Program.
As a research advisor and consultant, he has designed methodologies for qualitative investigations across Melanesia, focusing on gender-based violence prevention, HIV/AIDS programming, and culturally appropriate intervention frameworks. His applied work directly informs policy development through partnerships with PNG government agencies and international NGOs working in the Pacific region.
