Richard E. Hughes

Richard E. Hughes is an Associate Professor at the University of Michigan's Department of Industrial and Operations Engineering, leading the Laboratory for Optimization and Computation in Orthopaedic Surgery (LOCOS). His work focuses on applying computational methods to improve musculoskeletal health, with a primary emphasis on quality improvement in joint replacement surgery through the Michigan Arthroplasty Registry Collaborative Quality Initiative (MARCQI). MARCQI, a state-wide registry, has reduced transfusion risks and improved surgical outcomes. His research also addresses causal inference in healthcare, visualization of registry data for clinical decision-making, and biomechanical modeling for litigation.
