Richard Dugdale is an Adjunct Professor of Biology at San Francisco State University (SFSU), affiliated with the Estuary and Ocean Science Center (EOS) at the Romberg Tiburon Campus. His work focuses on biological oceanography, biogeochemical cycling, and phytoplankton dynamics in estuaries and coastal upwelling systems. He pioneered the use of stable isotope ¹⁵N to study nutrient utilization and developed the concept of 'new production,' a cornerstone in understanding marine productivity and carbon sequestration.
Research Interests:
- Phytoplankton ecology and nutrient interactions (nitrogen, silicon, carbon)
- Estuarine dynamics, particularly San Francisco Bay and Delta
- Climate change impacts on coastal ecosystems
- Modeling of biogeochemical cycles (e.g., SCHISM/CoSiNE)
Selected Awards and Recognition:
- Hutchinson Award (Limnology and Oceanography)
- Fellowships: American Geophysical Union, AAAS, California Academy of Sciences
- Doctorate Honoris Causa from University of Marseilles
Labs/Teams: Lead researcher at the Dugdale Lab, collaborating with the Wilkerson Lab on coupled hydrodynamic-ecosystem modeling projects. Active in fieldwork using the R/V Questuary in San Francisco Bay.
