Richard Dougherty, PhD, is the Dean of Braniff Graduate School and Professor of Politics at the University of Dallas. He holds multiple roles including Politics Graduate Program Director and Director of the Center for Christianity and the Common Good. His professional experience spans over 25 years, including leadership as Department Chair (2011–2019) and Associate Professor (2000–2020). Dougherty has also served as a Visiting Professor at the Katholische Universität Eichstätt-Ingolstadt in Germany and as a faculty representative for the Lilly Fellows Program in Humanities and the Arts.
Education includes a PhD and MA in Political Philosophy from the University of Dallas and a BA in Political Science from Belmont Abbey College. His research focuses on classical and medieval political thought, Catholic political theory, and American political philosophy. Key interests include Augustine’s political ethics, natural law, and the intersection of religion and politics in democratic systems.
Recent publications explore topics such as Augustine’s natural law, Aquinas’s legal theory, migration’s impact on American political solidarity, and the role of religion in liberal democracy. His presentations span international conferences, including Oxford’s Patristic Studies and the American Political Science Association meetings. Dougherty teaches courses on political regimes, the presidency, Catholic political thought, and medieval philosophy.
