Richard Davidson is the William James and Vilas Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He leads research on emotional regulation, affective disorders, and the neural mechanisms of mindfulness. His work integrates neuroimaging techniques like fMRI and EEG to study brain function in health and disease. Davidson directs the Center for Healthy Minds (centerhealthyminds.org), focusing on promoting well-being through scientific research. His research interests include PTSD, depression, and the effects of meditation on brain structure/function. Notable contributions include studies on amygdala-prefrontal cortex interactions and cortical-subcortical circuits in emotion regulation. Davidson's interdisciplinary approach bridges clinical psychology, neuroscience, and contemplative science.
His research spans clinical populations and healthy individuals, with emphasis on longitudinal studies and large-scale collaborations like the ENIGMA consortium. He has published over 500 papers, including seminal work on meditation's neural correlates. Current projects explore digital health interventions, pandemic mental health impacts, and neuroimaging-based predictive modeling. Davidson collaborates internationally, advocating for evidence-based well-being practices in education and healthcare systems.
