Dr. Richard Cruse is a Professor in the Department of Agronomy at Iowa State University and Director of the Iowa Water Center, one of 54 national Water Resources Research Institutes. His work integrates research, teaching, and outreach to address soil erosion, soil management, and water quality challenges. He leads initiatives like the Agricultural Conservation Planning Framework National Hub and the Daily Erosion Project, providing real-time erosion and runoff estimates for agricultural landscapes.
His research focuses on modeling soil erosion dynamics, nutrient management, and the impact of cover crops on phosphorus and nitrogen loss. Key projects include evaluating conservation practices, quantifying ephemeral gully erosion, and assessing climate change effects on agroresources. Cruse teaches advanced soil management courses in the Agronomy Graduate Program and collaborates with diverse stakeholders to implement sustainable practices.
Cruse’s contributions extend to interdepartmental programs like Sustainable Agriculture and the Comparison of Biofuel Systems (COBS). He actively engages with policymakers and farmers to translate scientific findings into actionable conservation strategies, emphasizing the nexus between soil health, water quality, and agricultural productivity.
His work has advanced understanding of sediment movement, gully erosion mapping, and the integration of remote sensing tools for conservation planning. The Iowa Water Center under his leadership serves as a hub for collaborative research addressing critical water resource challenges in Iowa and beyond.
