Richard Bindler is a Professor at the Department of Ecology, Environment and Geoscience, Umeå University, within the Faculty of Science and Technology. His research focuses on paleolimnology and environmental change, particularly examining long-term human impacts on ecosystems. Since 2018, he has chaired the employment committee at his faculty.
Bindler’s research utilizes lake sediments and peat archives to reconstruct environmental histories spanning millennia. Key areas include acidification, atmospheric metal pollution, carbon cycling, and climate change, often integrating interdisciplinary approaches like geochemistry and DNA analysis.
His recent publications highlight trends in Holocene climate reconstructions, volcanic eruption records in Tibet, methane production in Arctic lakes, and human impacts on sediment geochemistry. Articles emphasize mineral proxies, carbon dynamics, and advanced analytical techniques.
Bindler’s work is affiliated with Umeå University’s KBC-Fysiologihuset, Linnaeus väg 6, Umeå. He collaborates extensively across international projects, with fieldwork in Sweden, Chile, Brazil, and China.
