Professor Richard Bellamy is Professor of Political Science at University College London and Senior Fellow at the Hertie School in Berlin. As founding Head of UCL's Department of Political Science and former Director of UCL's European Institute, he has shaped significant academic programs in political theory and European studies.
His research encompasses:
- Intellectual history of European political thought
- Normative theories of citizenship and constitutionalism
- Democratic legitimacy in the European Union
- Republican political theory
His extensive publication record demonstrates sustained engagement with constitutional theory, democratic representation, and European integration. Recent work critically examines challenges to democratic systems including populism and differentiated integration in the EU context.
Honors include:
- Fellow of the British Academy
- Member of Academia Europaea
- Serena Medal for Italian studies
He co-edits the journal CRISPP and leads major projects on EU governance, directing the Max Weber Post-doctoral Programme from 2014-2019.
