Richard Battistoni serves as Professor of Political Science at Providence College, where he contributes to academic discourse on American governance and civic participation through teaching and research.
His educational foundation includes a Ph.D. in Political Science from Rutgers University (1982) and a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Southern California (1976).
Professor Battistoni's research centers on American constitutional frameworks, civic engagement pedagogy, and democratic leadership development. His seminal work, the 11th edition of Constitutional Government: The American Experience (2020), synthesizes historical and contemporary analysis of U.S. political institutions while emphasizing practical civic education. His scholarship bridges theoretical constitutional principles with real-world applications through structured undergraduate engagement programs.
Recent publications demonstrate sustained focus on how multi-term cohort-based civic initiatives cultivate post-graduation civic action, reflecting interdisciplinary approaches spanning political theory, institutional analysis, and educational methodology.
He secured two significant research grants during 2012-2013: Civic Identity in the Real World (funded by the Committee on Aid to Faculty Research) and Educating for Democratic Leadership (funded by Merrimack College). These projects investigated longitudinal impacts of cohort-driven civic engagement curricula on students' democratic participation, directly integrating undergraduate cohorts into applied research on civic identity formation.
