Richard Barrett is Professor of Research in Creative Music at Leiden University's Academy of Creative and Performing Arts (ACPA). He maintains an active international career as both composer and performer while holding academic positions at multiple institutions including the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague where he teaches at the Institute of Sonology.
His research interests focus on the development of new concepts for relating improvisation to other compositional methods. This work spans pedagogical contexts such as directing the Sonology Electroacoustic Ensemble at the Royal Conservatoire, as well as within his own creative practice. His musical output encompasses a wide spectrum from free improvisation to intricately-notated scores, and from acoustic chamber music and orchestral composition to innovative applications of digital technology.
Barrett was awarded his PhD from the University of Leeds in 2018 for his thesis "Music of Possibility," which was subsequently published in book form by Vision Edition in 2019. His creative works include compositions such as "arboreal" and "life-form," which demonstrate his sophisticated approach to electroacoustic composition and sound design.
He supervises doctoral students at both Leiden University's Academy of Creative and Performing Arts and the Orpheus Institute, contributing significantly to advanced music research and creative practice in European academic contexts.
