Richard Bardgett is a Professor at The University of Manchester and will transition to Lancaster University in 2025 to lead the new Centre for Sustainable Soils. His work bridges plant and soil ecology, focusing on biogeochemical cycles and climate change resilience. He holds a CBE for services to soil ecology and climate science, and serves on DEFRA’s Scientific Advisory Council.
Education: BSc in Soil and Land Resource Science (University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 1987); PhD in Soil Ecology (Lancaster University, 1991). Research spans grasslands, alpine tundra, and tropical forests, emphasizing plant-soil interactions, soil biodiversity, and land management impacts. He has secured over £10M in grants, including an ERC Advanced Grant (SoilResist).
Key research themes include: (1) Plant trait effects on soil microbial communities; (2) Climate change impacts on soil carbon dynamics; (3) Herbivore-driven ecosystem shifts; (4) Policy translation for soil protection. He co-founded the Global Soil Biodiversity Initiative and advises international bodies on soil as natural capital.
Notable awards include Clarivate’s Highly Cited Researcher (2017–2024), Member Academia Europaea (2015), and Doctor Honoris Causa from Hasselt University (2015). Grants include NERC-funded projects on soil microbiome stability and shrub-driven alpine carbon cycles.
