Professor Richard Ayres is a Visiting Professor in Composition at the Amsterdam Conservatoire. Born in Cornwall (1965), he studied composition and electronic music at Huddersfield Polytechnic (Distinction, 1989) and later worked with Louis Andriessen at The Hague's Royal Conservatoire. He has been a permanent resident in the Netherlands since 1994.
His compositional style blends Baroque poise with avant-garde elements, incorporating Straussian pastiche and tango influences. Key honors include the International Gaudeamus Prize (1994) and the Netherlands' highest composition award, the Vermeulen Prize (2003). He was prominently featured at the 2003 Huddersfield Festival.
Ayres has taught at the Amsterdam Conservatoire since 2006, focusing on contemporary composition techniques. His work is described as 'zany and anarchic' yet deeply human, exemplified by pieces like The Cricket Recovers.
