Richard Alexander Lou is a Professor in the Department of Art and Design at the University of Memphis. Born in San Diego, CA, and raised in San Diego and Tijuana, BCN, MX, he brings a unique perspective shaped by his biracial heritage, guided by his anti-colonialist Chinese father and culturally affirming Mexicana mother. His academic background includes an A.A. in Fine Art (1981) from Southwestern College, a B.A. in Fine Art (1983) from California State University, Fullerton, and an M.F.A. in Fine Art (1986) from Clemson University.

His research and artistic practice focus on interdisciplinary explorations of cultural identity, particularly within Chicana/o and mixed-race communities. He has contributed to over 30 scholarly books and curated exhibitions like Hecho en Califas: The last Decade, emphasizing themes of border studies, public art, and the secularization of cultural iconography. His work spans photography, critical essays, and collaborative projects such as Los Anthropolocos.
Notable publications include contributions to The Routledge Companion to Latina/o Popular Culture (2016), Born of Resistance: Cara a Cara Encounters with Chicana/o Visual Culture (2015), and War Baby/Love Child: Mixed Race Asian American Art (2013). He has also written curatorial essays for exhibitions like POSTBORDERCITY (2004) and Islas y Puentes (50th Anniversary Issue, TDR’s The Drama Review, 2000).
