Richard A. F. Clark, M.D., is a Professor in the Department of Dermatology at Stony Brook University, where he has held academic appointments since 1990. He also served as Chair of Dermatology (1990–2003) and Director of the Center for Tissue Engineering. His academic roles include adjunct professorships in Biomedical Engineering and Medicine. Dr. Clark's research focuses on wound healing mechanisms, fibronectin biology, and translational therapies for burn injuries. He holds multiple patents and has led development of the cP12 peptide therapy, now in clinical trials for burn treatment. His extensive professional involvement includes leadership roles in the Society for Investigative Dermatology, Wound Healing Society, and various editorial boards.
- Education: S.B. from MIT (1966), M.S./M.D. from University of Rochester (1971)
- Research: Pioneered understanding of integrin-mediated cell migration in wounds
- Clinical: Founded NeoMatrix Therapeutics to advance burn therapies
Research interests emphasize fibronectin-peptide interactions, PDGF signaling pathways, and translational applications of tissue engineering. His lab's discoveries include key fibronectin domains enhancing wound healing and the development of cP12, which received Orphan Drug Designation in 2017. Awards include NIH Merit Award (1996) and election to multiple prestigious societies.
