Richard A Niesenbaum is a Professor in the Department of Biology at Muhlenberg College, where he also serves as Director of the Sustainability Studies Program and Director of the RJ Fellows Program. His academic foundation includes a Ph.D. and B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania, and an M.S. from the University of Connecticut.
Research Focus: Niesenbaum conducts interdisciplinary research spanning plant ecology and sustainability science. His ecological work investigates genetic, chemical, and environmental factors influencing insect herbivory, supported by over $1 million in NSF funding. His sustainability research includes long-term projects in Costa Rica examining eco-tourism development, artisanal gold mining impacts, alternative fuels, and public health, alongside work in Guatemala assessing sustainable practices.
