Riccardo Natoli is an Associate Professor and Associate Director of Research at the ANU College of Science and Medicine, School of Medicine and Psychology. He holds a PhD and BSc (Hons) and leads the Clear Vision Research group, focusing on developing diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). His work is funded by NHMRC grants, industry partnerships, and an ANU Translational Fellowship.
Research interests include miRNA and extracellular vesicles (EVs) in retinal degeneration, oxidative stress, and inflammation. He has pioneered outreach programs like 'Young Visionaries' to promote eye health education. Notably, he received the 2019 Tall Poppy Award and chairs the International Society for Eye Research (ISER) conference. His labs' work has been featured in media including National Nine News and ABC Radio.
He lectures in genetics and cell biology, emphasizing research-led education. Key projects include developing animal models for retinal degenerations, EV-based therapies, and investigating exercise's role in retinal health. His research group collaborates internationally and has produced over 80 publications.
