Ricardo Codinhoto is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering at the University of Bath, affiliated with The Foundry: Centre for Digital, Manufacturing & Design. His research focuses on advancing design theory, practice, and education, particularly in evidence-based design, BIM for facilities management (BIM FM), and design for health and wellbeing. He has led projects funded by EPSRC, ESRC, MRC, and NIHR, collaborating with organizations like Salford Royal Foundation Trust and the Government Office for Science.
Key research areas include:
- Building Information Modelling (BIM) applications in FM and early design stages
- Healthcare environments and dementia-friendly design
- Lean design and construction principles
- Digital twins and IoT integration for maintenance
- Sustainable development goals (SDGs), particularly related to healthcare and urban design
He has contributed to policy development and industry practices through projects such as the Salford Royal Foundation Trust’s service design integration and the Manchester Town Hall Complex BIM implementation. His work emphasizes bridging theory and practice, with a focus on improving design outcomes through evidence-based methodologies.
Recent publications explore statistical maintenance analysis for digital twins, BIM adoption in small architectural firms, and participatory methods in social housing. Codinhoto has also served as an External Examiner at the University of West London (2017–2020).
