Dr. Rezwanul Wahid is an Adjunct Associate Professor in Pediatrics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He specializes in vaccine immunology, focusing on evaluating immunogenicity of vaccines and understanding immune mechanisms against pathogens like Salmonella, Shigella, and Norovirus. His research employs advanced techniques such as multi-color flow cytometry and ELISPOT assays to study T/B cell responses and antibody functions.
Education:
- Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS), Dhaka Medical College, Bangladesh (1987)
- Ph.D., Kagoshima University School of Medicine, Japan (1996)
- Clinical Fellow, Dhaka Children’s Hospital, Pediatrics (1987-1988)
- Postdoctoral Research Fellowships at Kagoshima University (1999-2001) and University of Maryland Center for Vaccine Development (2001-2007)
Research Focus: Translational research on vaccine-induced immune responses, particularly cross-reactive T/B cell immunity against enteric pathogens. His work aims to identify correlates of protection for typhoid, paratyphoid, shigellosis, and Ebola vaccines.
Key Contributions:
- Elucidated cross-reactive CD4+/CD8+ T cell responses induced by Ty21a typhoid vaccine.
- Discovered opsonophagocytic antibodies in Typhi and Paratyphi vaccines.
- Developed mathematical models to predict Shigella vaccine efficacy.
Grants & Collaborations:
- NIH/NIAID grants (R01 AI36525, U19 AI109776) for studying typhoid vaccine mechanisms.
- Collaborations on Ebola vaccine trials and dmLT adjuvant development.
Labs/Teams: Part of the Enteric Center for Excellence in Translational Research (Enteric CETR) and the University of Maryland Vaccine Development Program.
