Reza Ghiladi is a Professor and Director of Graduate Programs in the Department of Chemistry at North Carolina State University. He holds the title of University Faculty Scholar and leads research in chemical biology, enzyme catalysis, and antimicrobial materials. His work integrates structural biology techniques like X-ray and neutron crystallography with material science innovations.
Education: Ph.D. (2001), M.S. (1997) in Chemistry from Johns Hopkins University; B.S. (1995) in Chemistry from Haverford College.
Research focuses on elucidating structure-function relationships in catalytic globins, developing photodynamic antimicrobial materials, and studying enzyme mechanisms. Key areas include multifunctional hemoglobins like dehaloperoxidase, quantum dot-based antimicrobial agents, and novel biosynthetic pathways in bacteria. Recent work emphasizes antibacterial photodynamic therapies and self-disinfecting polymer surfaces.
Publications highlight advancements in antimicrobial materials, enzyme kinetics, and microbial pathogenicity mechanisms. His lab collaborates across disciplines in drug discovery, energy materials, and structural biology. Research is supported by grants focusing on bioremediation proteins, photodynamic infection control, and catalytic enzyme studies.
He leads the Chemical Biology Faculty group within the College of Sciences and contributes to institutional leadership in graduate education and interdisciplinary research initiatives.
