Rex Butler is a Professor of Art History & Theory at Monash University. His research focuses on Australian art, art criticism, Post-War American art, and Critical Theory. He has authored/edited 11 books including UnAustralian Art and Stanley Cavell and the Arts. He is currently editing collections on Rei Kawakubo and Joshua Oppenheimer.
Education: PhD in Art History from the University of Sydney (1990). Key collaborations include projects on Colin McCahon and Queensland art history. He has contributed to over 127 research outputs across articles, book chapters, and curated works.
Research interests emphasize transnational art history, critical theory applications, and intersections between philosophy and art.
